Jeffrey “Scott” Wheeler
I grew up in Newport, NC, and graduated from West Carteret High School in 1986. I have spent the majority of my life living in the most beautiful place on Earth. My adult life was spent working in the manufactured home industry in the 90’s and the insurance world from 2001 until 2025. I started and grew an independent insurance agency from scratch to over 2.4 million in revenue when I sold it.
In the insurance world, I concentrated on insuring condominium and homeowner’s associations in particular, with the last 10 years being exclusively focused on that niche. I have taught classes on HOA insurance to lawyers and real estate agents in NC for years.
I take my professional responsibilities very seriously. Throughout my career, I dedicated myself to learning everything I could about my area of expertise. I spent years continuing my education and earned several professional designations. There are over 900,000 insurance agents in the US.
CIC – Certified Insurance Counselor– this is a five-part professional designation that is considered to be the benchmark designation in the insurance world. These five parts can be taken over several years, with each part requiring a passing score on an essay test taken at the end of each session. Most designees take one or two a year. I took and passed all of them in one 12-month period. Less than 10% of all insurance agents hold this designation.
ANFI – Associates in National Flood Insurance– this is a three-part learning opportunity that I thought was of utmost importance due to concentrating on coastal properties in my insurance career. I completed this three-part class in one month. Only a few thousand agents hold this designation.
AINS – Associate in Insurance– again- three courses plus an ethics class to complete. This is an introductory class to gain mastery of insurance basics. It is estimated that approx 50,000 agents in the US hold this designation.
AAI – Accredited Insurance Advisor– this is a more advanced designation to gain further knowledge of insurance solutions to protect client personal and commercial risks as well as using insurance tools to help plan for the financial well-being of the client. Approx 25,000 agents in the US hold this designation.
CAWC – Certified Authority on Workers Compensation– Advanced designations focusing on the needs of employers and HOA boards for work comp coverage. Only a couple of thousand agents hold this designation.
CBIA – Certified Builders Insurance Agent– this is a special designation for construction-related insurance agents. Only a few hundred agents hold this designation CPIA- Certified Professional Insurance Agent- Less than 10,000 holders of this designation in the US. This is an advanced designation to help insurance agents move into a role of becoming a true trusted professional advisor for clients as opposed to telemarketing style order takers.
CPIA – Certified Professional Insurance Agent– Less than 10,000 holders of this designation in the US. This is an advanced designation to help insurance agents move into a role of becoming a true trusted professional advisor for clients as opposed to telemarketing style order takers.
CMCA – Certified Manager of Community Associations– while not an insurance designation, the focus of this designation is the professional management of condo and homeowners’ associations. Since my focus was on these areas, I felt it would be beneficial to know more about this area of expertise. The number of insurance agents who obtain this certification in their profession is probably in the tens or low hundreds.
It is this dedication to knowledge and learning that I bring to the table in helping my clients find and secure the right property for their needs.
